Use this "Spheres of Influence Tool" to help clients, fans and followers who are stuck in anxiety and worry. This simple idea helps people identify what is within their control, and let go of what is not. A great idea to use as a sample session offer.

Grab your Spheres of Influence Tool here (.docx) >>

TOOL INSTRUCTIONS:

Pre-Session

  • Add your branding and details to the Header and Footer of this tool, and if you like, save it as a .PDF.
  • Send your clients this Spheres of Influence Tool and ask them to print it out before the session. Alternatively you can ask your client to have pen and paper ready (and simply draw 2 circles when the time comes).

During the Session

  1. Ask your client to have the Spheres of Influence printout in front of them (or a pen and paper).
  2. Next ask your client to take a moment to calmly consider the list of things contributing to their worries and feelings of overwhelm. It could be worrying about running out of food, what's going to happen, the dentist appointment they cancelled but can't reschedule yet, worry about someone they care about, feeling tired, work issues, lack of work, feelings of guilt etc.
  3. If your client doesn't have the tool printout: Ask them to write "My Spheres of Influence" as a heading at the top of the page. Then ask them to draw one large circle that almost fills the page, followed by a second circle inside the first circle (that takes up roughly 1/3 of the larger circle's space). Ask them to write "Within my control" inside the smallest circle, "I can influence" inside the largest circle and "Everything Else" somewhere outside the circles on the page. TIP: If you're on video, show them the tool visually.
  4. Now using their drawing or the tool, ask your client to write out each 'Worry Item' on their "Spheres of Influence". Your client must assess each worry item and decide:
    1. Do they have complete CONTROL over the worry item (ie. they can resolve it on their own without needing anyone else's help or input):
      • If so, tell them to write it down within the first circle labeled "WITHIN MY CONTROL" and move onto the next item.
    2. If they have PARTIAL control / can INFLUENCE the outcome of the worry item (ie. they can partly resolve the worry item or influence the outcome through their actions or behaviour)
      • Tell them to write this item within the second circle labeled "I CAN INFLUENCE" and move onto their next worry on the list.
    3. Finally, if the worry item is COMPLETELY OUTSIDE of their control or influence (ie. there is nothing they can do or say that could directly impact this worry)
      • Tell them to write this item OUTSIDE the circles in the area labeled "EVERYTHING ELSE…" and move onto their next worry.
  5. Once your client has written out all their 'Worry Items' in the relevant area, ask them to review their "Spheres of Influence".
    1. For the worry items they have CONTROL over:
      • Ask them to IDENTIFY AN ACTION (however small) for each action.
      • TIP: It's helpful to action ONE of these today - or even RIGHT NOW - to instantly feel better.
    2. For the items they have INFLUENCE / PARTIAL control over:
      • Ask them to write down the steps they will take and exactly when they will do them - today or in the next few days.
    3. Finally (and most importantly)
      • Ask them to LET GO of EVERYTHING ELSE! Let them know they get to choose how they spend their energy. So they can choose to focus on what is WITHIN their CONTROL and INFLUENCE. It's a complete waste of energy (and big stress increaser) to worry about things they can do NOTHING about!
      • ext ask them to physically STRIKETHROUGH each of these "Everything Else" items on their "Spheres of Influence". After all, if they can't control or influence it, then it's a waste of your precious energy to even think about it.
      • TIP: If they struggle with this idea (and even if not!) ask your client to consider how it FEELS to let go of the things they have no control over.
      • TIP: As well as striking out the "Everything Else" items, your clients could also cut out around the big circle, scrunching up the "Everything Else" items and putting them in the bin. This is a powerful way to "let go".

AN EXAMPLE (for you or the client) - worrying about an upcoming exam:

  • Perhaps you're worrying about how little study you've been doing. This goes under "CONTROL" - how much we study is entirely within our control. Note: If they're also beating themselves up about how much study they did last week then that goes in "EVERYTHING ELSE" - because we have no control over the past...
  • Concerned whether a teacher will recommend you or give you a reference? Put this under "INFLUENCE". You may not be able to control your teacher's actions, but there are many things you could do to influence them…
  • Worrying what questions might come up on the exam paper? Put this under "EVERYTHING ELSE". Short of cheating, this is completely outside of your control. Focus on what you have control over (your study) and let go of this one!

Serenity Prayer on Ipad next to Window for COVID-19 Care Package for Coaches

Serenity Prayer 3D Image for COVID-19 Care Package

Reinhold Neibuhr's "Serenity Prayer" is beautiful - and encourages us to accept with grace what we cannot change. During this COVID-19 crisis, with so much out of our control, this prayer is the perfect antidote to worry and stress.

I have used a secular* version of Reinhold Neibuhr's "Serenity Prayer" to help coaches, their families and clients feel calmer - and let go of what is not in their control. Use this "printable" with yourself and your family, clients - and you can share in your newsletter or on Social Media too!

2 Filetypes For You to Choose From:

I have created 2 "ready to use" versions for you. If you'd like to edit the prayer or add your branding, choose the Microsoft Word .DOCX version and use the space in the bottom left-hand corner for your logo etc. Please Note: The fonts are different for the Microsoft Word Version, and you can also change them if you like.

A little Serenity Prayer history:

There are many, many different versions of this prayer, and it has been adapted, quoted and used by many - including by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) who popularised and used it as part of their 12 Step Program, and named it "The Serenity Prayer".

According to Wikipedia, the original prayer was written by Reinhold Niebuhr in the early 1930s and simply said, "Father, give us courage to change what must be altered, serenity to accept what cannot be helped, and the insight to know the one from the other." Reinhold wrote his versions of the prayer as a single sentence - not placing it into 3 lines like a poem as is commonly seen.

* I chose to remove references to God and Jesus so that the prayer would be as accessible as possible to the most people - irrespective of a person's religion or spirituality. Below is the "original" long version of the prayer as shared on Wikipedia should you wish to include the religious references for your audience or own use. If so, use the Microsoft Word version and you can edit it to your heart's content.

Full Unedited (Non-Secular) Version of the Prayer

God, give me grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.

Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.

Amen.                           Non-Secular Prayer Source: Wikipedia

Maya Angelou Still I Rise Poem

Maya Angelou Poem 3D Flyer

Maya Angelou's "Still I Rise" poem is powerful - and inspires us to be our most courageous selves! Like much of her work this poem offers hope, and determination to rise above struggle and discouragement.

Because as this COVID-19 crisis continues, as we also continue to unearth social justice issues - this poem reminds us to be strong and resilient - to grow from difficulty, and to hope for a better future for all.

Use this "printable" with yourself and your family, clients - and you can share it in your newsletter or on Social Media too!

A little background:

In an interview in 2008, Maya said of her poetry: "You know, if you're lonely you feel you've been done down, it's nice to have 'And Still I Rise.'"

You can find this poem "Still I Rise" in her third volume of poetry published in 1978. This poetry volume was called "And Still I Rise" and contains 32 short poems including another popular poem "Phenomenal Woman".

If you'd like the text of the poem, here it is below:

Still I Rise

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may tread me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my soulful cries.

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin' in my own back yard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I'll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history's shame
I rise
Up from a past that's rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.

Your kindness and generosity never ceases to amaze me. I appreciate all the guidance and resources you provide me.

I am excited to bring this meditation to my clients. I may be missing something. I saw the meditation script. This is perfect but is there a meditation of just music that I can use with it? I don't see how I can guide them with the meditation in your email. It already has someone guiding them.

Thank you again for all you do.

      Hi Julie,

So, first, thank-you for your kind words <3

The audio is for you to play (or download and play) - it is a guided meditation audio.
The script is just the script for you to read - in case you prefer to read it to your clients (or family!) personally.

So, assuming I have understood you correctly:

There isn't just "background music" for you to read the script to. It's fine without background music. Just your voice! I did write some tips about reading guided meditations here that you might find helpful: https://www.thecoachingtoolscompany.com/10-easy-tips-read-guided-meditations-beautifully/

I hope this helps! Warmly, Emma-Louise

    Dearest Emma-Louise,

You are amazing!! My cup runneth over. I get tears in my eyes every time you gift us with free downloads for our clients. My clients don't have much money and are scared and praying to heal from stage 3 or stage 4 cancer. They are extraordinary women who feel counseling is not enough.

I have been a life coach for four years now, and your tools are by far the most helpful that I have ever come across; you are a big part of helping me. I love your templates and everything you have to offer.
You are extraordinary, and your life-coaching messages compliment my work so well. Most of my clients have had to give up their career dreams, quit their jobs, and focus on the fight for their lives and all that comes with healing emotionally and gaining mental strength. They need coaching, and my style is unique because they are not having problems getting started with careers, they are dealing with the letting go part and trying to feel useful while they are ill.

THANK YOU FOR BEING AN ANGEL IN MY WORK!
God bless you for all you do for so many life coaches!

    Most sincerely,
    Shannon Knight
