It can be hard to make a living as a coach. So I chose this quote to inspire you to keep going doing what you love—and to do it with all your heart!

You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don't make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people can't take their eyes off you. Maya Angelou

Below I share why I selected this quote, as well as an alternative square graphic version—and some journaling prompts to explore over the holidays based on this quote.

Why I chose this quote for 2023

Instability and volatility seems to be increasing around the world whether it's in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan or all the places that have dropped out of the news cycle. Environmental and weather disasters seem to be increasing. We still have relatively high interest rates and inflation, as well increasing political instability in industrialised countries.

Coaches are needed more than ever. We must lead the way by being authentically ourselves. We must continue to go after our dreams of making a difference!

Please Note: Maya doesn't say we should only do what we love doing, because when you run your own business you have to do plenty you don't love... Instead, she reminds us that to become truly accomplished at something, it needs to be something we love.

So she's telling us to align what we do with our values, to do what makes our heart sing! And to do it with all of our hearts!

Ultimately I hear Maya saying:

You're amazing! The way to success is to be you & to do what you love! Show the world! Go for it!

Here's a great way to use this quote for inspirational journaling over the holidays

Simply answer each line of the quote in your journal:

  • What do I love doing? In my life? In my business? Make two lists!
  • How can I do more of these?
  • How could I express my skills and talents in the world more?
  • What would it look like to do what you love with all your heart?
  • How will I share my enthusiasm with others?
  • What actions will I take towards my dreams?
  • When/how/where will I celebrate my life and my awesome self?

And to wrap-up and get ready for 2024:

  • Make a list of your blessings: How can you embrace these?
  • How will I make today worth remembering?

    Hi Emma-Louise,
In reflection with all the dizzying uncertainty, and how chaotic world events are affecting peoples' emotional health, what kind of coaches are needed now? Any ideas?

    Thanks so much,
    Angela

      Hi Angela,
What a great question. Coaches who can help people be more flexible and resilient are going to be needed and helpful. Coaches who can help people handle and process change. And who can help people see options and new ways forwards. Creativity, Calm, Resilience, Flexibility, Inner Strength.
Leadership is also a very hot topic. In organizations, yes, but also being a leader in your own life. Grabbing the bull by the horns so to speak. Making life work for you, not waiting for things to come to you.
Coaches who can help people get clarity and connect people to what motivates them.
I hope that gives you some ideas!
      Warmly, Emma-Louise
