About Garry Schleifer PCC, CMC:

Lives in: Toronto, Canada

Type of Coach: Business Coach

Describe your coaching business in one sentence: I'm a business coach who works with people who have at least 5 people working for them. But the description that really describes me is... applying an approach of "Ruthless Compassion" when helping his business owner clients: I challenge clients with transformative coaching, rigorous goals, innate sensitivity, good humor and non-judgment.

Meet Garry:

QUESTION 1: What one book should every coach read - and why?

This book is more of a resource than a book to sit down and read: Sourcebook of Coaching History  by Vikki Brocks.

It gives great insight and perspective to the sources of the coaching profession and leaves you with a grounded sense of purpose. It really makes you proud to be a coach.

QUESTION 2: Which website do you visit the most?

Sadly it's usually Facebook but mostly my own websites. Being an online marketer I'm usually too busy working with my stuff to look elsewhere. The other sites I look at are those of online marketers who are leaders in the industry. People like Jeff Walker. I also watch fellow colleagues who are on the journey with me. I like to see what and how they are doing things and if they work.

QUESTION 3: Whom do you admire most?

I truly admire people like Barack and Michelle Obama, Bill and Melinda Gates, and Ellen Degeneres and Portia de Rossi. Regardless of what they have become and what has been thrown at them, they still lead from loving open hearts.

I also admire the coaching leaders who built this profession. Thomas J Leonard, Janet Harvey, Kay Cannon, Pamela Richarde, Marcia Reynolds, Vikki Brock, Laura Berman Fortgang, Teri-E Belf, Magda Mook, and so many more.

QUESTION 4: What's your vision for your life? Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I'm on a freedom mission. Most entrepreneurs start out because they want freedom. Freedom from their bosses. Financial freedom. Time Freedom. And most of us, me included, spend more time than that regular job we left, working on our businesses. So my mission is to change that.

After over 15 years of working on MY freedom, in 5 years I'd like to teach business owners how to let their businesses run on their own and join me at destination retreats. I see myself busy teaching them what I've learned in gaining financial, time, location, mindset and self-expression freedom.

QUESTION 5: What is your "big project" at the moment?

My big projects are growing choice, the magazine of professional coaching and delivering the Freetime Bootcamp for Entrepreneurs.

choice Magazine has been published for over 18 years and the goal is to reach a lot more coaches.

My Bootcamp program will free entrepreneurs from their businesses and let them have the freedom they thought they signed up for.

QUESTION 6: What has been your most powerful moment in coaching so far?

There have been a few best moments. My favorite was when I was on the phone with a client. I noticed that my hand was on my heart. When I asked them to put their hand on their heart they told me it was already there.

Another favorite was again when I was on the phone with another client and I felt like they were in a dark place. Turns out they were literally sitting talking to me in a room with no windows or lights on. But my best moments are when I'm really very present to the coaching and I ask a question (that I don't even know where it came from) and the client just stops and there is a look of wonder and deep realization. Priceless.

QUESTION 7: What are your Top 3 favourite coaching tools and/or resources?

As I mentioned earlier, the Sourcebook of Coaching is a great resource and reference book. My others are photo card decks, online and offline assessments, the Wheel of Life, and The Paper Room system.

QUESTION 8: What do you love most about being a coach?

I love that I get to be a partner with my clients and see their "Aha" moments, their struggles, their successes and their celebrations as a trusted listener. The fact that I can be one of the only people in their lives who will be real with them.

QUESTION 9: Tell us a secret about you...

I've become an online marketing and learning delivery geek.

If you had asked me a year ago what was WooCommerce, LMS Lifter or a content marketing strategy I would have looked at you like you were crazy. Fast forward and now not only do I know these things but I now have and need not one but 5 websites for my new program learning access, new store, the new program, lead generation site, and the existing site.

The craziest part about this is that even after well over a year of this intent learning curve, I still love it.

QUESTION 10: If you could change one thing in our world, what would it be? And how would you go about it?

It's a relatively new conversation that started when the coaching profession really kicked off over 20 years ago: integrating coaching into society.

What would the world be like if coaching was taught at an early age and became a part of society's way of being?
