Why International Women's Day?

International Women's Day (IWD) is not just for women, it's a day for everyone to celebrate the achievements of women throughout history—achievements that have often been glossed over or forgotten.

When recording history, those in power (almost always men) were the ones who decided what to write. Women were limited in their education and freedoms, so achievements were rarer—but even then, sometimes women's achievements were deliberately left out. And sometimes women's contributions to our world were simply not considered of enough value to make note of...

But IWD also reminds us of all the remaining gender-based inequalities in the world. And I hope that this reminder encourages those in positions of power (of whatever gender!) to do more to support and encourage women.

These IWD Quote Graphics

This year our International Women's Day quote graphics focus on leadership and making change: Beyoncé talks about changing how we see ourselves, Shirley Chisholm about showing up (even if not invited), Coretta Scott King talks about women saving the soul of a nation, Harriet Tubman reminds us we can achieve anything. And lastly, Diana Spencer (Princess Diana) reminds us that intolerance remains a huge problem in the world today (whether of women, people of different race/religion/size/age/education/class etc).

I hope you love these quote graphics as much as I do.

Some thought-provoking questions for everyone to consider this IWD

International Women's Day is a reminder every year that we still have a way to go to achieve gender equality, and that we all play a part. This year's #BreakTheBias theme has inspired me to learn even more about diversity and inclusivity, and to consider what I can do to be part of the solution—both personally and in my work.

  • Which aspects of IWD most interest you? ie. celebrating women's achievements, highlighting remaining issues, sustainability and diversity or something else?
  • How will you use this year's IWD to shift how you think—or coach—your female AND male clients?
  • What are you still overcoming? Where are your prejudices around women? (if you are a woman consider any prejudices or limiting beliefs you may have around women & beauty, skin colour, size, age, education, women's "roles" etc.)

Thank you for sharing these quotes and all the other great materials! 🙂
Whilst all quotes are fun and/or thought provoking, I love Harriet Tubman's quote the most. It goes beyond division and victimhood and speaks about the human potential. If we really want to change the world we must understand that division or "us versus them" mentality in any shape or form won't cut it. Compassion for all and the awareness of oneness open the way for a better future!
