Amazing, Inspiring Maya Angelou: 25 All-Time Favourite Maya Quotes!

Maya_AngelouOn Wednesday 28 May 2014, at the age of 86, activist and poet Maya Angelou passed away. An inspiration for many of us - she was raised by her grandmother (not her mother - although her mother was in her life) and overcame many personal trials including growing up in segregated South during the depression of the 1920s, being raped and having a child at a young age. But she never let any of these events define her - even as she acknowledged them in her many writings and seven memoirs!

Maya was awarded over 50 honorary degrees, served on 2 presidential committees and was given 2 medals - the National Medal of Arts from Bill Clinton and in 2010, President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom - the highest civilian honor in the US. She also received a Pulitzer Prize nomination for poetry book, "Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water 'fore I Diiie", 3 Grammys for her spoken albums and numerous health and educational facilities have been named after her.

For me, Maya Angelou was the epitomy of Fierce Kindness - a compassionate warrior - who never ceased sharing her wisdom and inspiring others. Not only that but she remained vibrant in both spirit and mind as she aged - showing us how to age with grace, style and verve.

Here are 14 of my all-time favourite Maya Angelou Quotes:
