Fast & Furious Decision Making Exercise - for two!

This is a fun exercise for 2 people.  You will need someone to play 'coach', someone to play 'client' and a goal or issue that the 'client' wants to make a decision around.
  1. The Client expresses the issue/goal in EXACTLY 7 words
  2. The Coach asks a question related to that issue/goal - also in EXACTLY 7 words
  3. The Client answers in EXACTLY 6 words
  4. The Coach asks a question in EXACTLY 6 words
  5. The Client answers in EXACTLY 5 words
    And so on until...
  6. The Coach asks the final question in EXACTLY 2 words
  7. The exercise ENDS with the Client making a decision in JUST 1 word!
The idea is that during this exercise the conscious mind, 1) has to really focus on the nub of the issue and 2) gets tied up counting the number of words. This creates a shortcut to the client's sub-conscious mind (ie. what they REALLY want) until they finally have to answer/make a decision in just one word!

The trick is to do it FAST and get a 'pace' going so the client doesn't have time to 'think'! And it's guaranteed laughs as you both struggle to communicate in a specific (small) number of words!

There Is No Such Thing As Try

The word Try implies a risk of failure. When our clients say, "I'll try" the chances are that on some level they're not being totally honest with us - or themselves.

I agree that sometimes "Try" can be helpful, a useful 'out' when someone really won't take no for an answer. Like their coach perhaps...

So, next time you hear "I'll try", perhaps ask them, "What's the hidden message in the 'try', what are you not saying?"

Then, once you've helped them identify what they're really avoiding saying, doing, acknowledging or committing to, they will be able to move forwards clearly and with integrity.

And with this honesty they will be taking their relationship with you AND themselves to the next level. Remember, if their answer is not a clear "Yes", it may better for them to say "No". Because if their mind is elsewhere - then maybe that's where they belong too!

7 Easy Ways To Make Decisions Simpler

Often our stress is caused by overwhelm; too much information, too much choice - and too much analysis! So, whether to help you or your clients, here are 7 Simple Ways to Make Decisions More Easily:

  1. Don't think - just pick! Trust your instincts instead of logic for a change. Try imagining a fortune cookie - the answer you need is hidden inside. Now, crack it open. What does it say?
  2. Just get started - small! There is often no substitute for experience. So, instead of over-analyzing or over-thinking, start small until you feel like going big!
  3. Set a time-limit. Decide how much time you're willing to spend researching and thinking about it. And when the time is up - let go and DECIDE. There will always be a better deal, a better answer somewhere - what is your time worth?
  4. Just do it with someone else! Nervous? Why not try it first with someone else you feel safe with?
  5. Let go and let luck decide! Close your eyes, point your finger and see where it lands! This is a fun one to try out in a restaurant when looking at the menu.
  6. Imagine you're 5, 25, 50 and 75 years old. What would you decide at each age-point? How does that inform your decision making?
  7.  No consequences! Imagine there are NO negative consequences - everything goes swimmingly, everyone supports you, all is well. What would you decide now?

Why not try one of these and see?
